The toxicity of catalpa for horses: what every owner should know

The catalpa (Catalpa bignonioides) regularly comes up in discussions among horse owners when it comes to choosing a shade tree in pastures. However, the question of the catalpa’s toxicity to horses deserves to be posed differently: not “is it dangerous?”, but “how dangerous is it compared to the truly lethal species present in our meadows?”

Catalpin and catalpa glycosides: real phytochemical profile

The seeds of the catalpa contain catalpin, an irritating substance for the digestive mucous membranes. This molecule, also present in the woody pods, can cause gastrointestinal disturbances if significantly ingested by domestic animals.

However, we observe a crucial point: the catalpa does not appear in any of the recent lists of toxic plants for horses published by RESPE, Classequine, Equio, or Mad Barn. These databases, regularly updated, list the plant species responsible for documented equine poisonings. The absence of the catalpa in these references is not an oversight; it reflects the lack of reported clinical cases.

The leaves, large and heart-shaped, do not have an alkaloid concentration comparable to that of a yew or oleander. A horse that chews on a catalpa leaf fallen to the ground is not exposed to the same risk as a horse that ingests a few grams of yew leaves. To delve deeper into the toxicity of catalpa for horses, it is necessary to distinguish between transient digestive irritation and serious systemic intoxication.

Yew, sycamore, ragwort: the real toxic trees and plants in equine pastures

The catalpa draws attention while far more dangerous species grow at the edges or within the plots. We recommend focusing vigilance on plants whose equine toxicity is firmly established.

  • The yew (Taxus baccata) remains the most feared tree in equine environments. All parts of the plant are toxic, and ingesting a minimal amount of leaves can lead to cardiac arrest within hours. The plant retains its toxicity even after drying.
  • The oleander (Nerium oleander) contains cardiotoxic glycosides. A handful of leaves is enough to cause fatal heart disturbances in an adult horse.
  • The sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) is responsible for equine atypical myopathy, a often fatal condition linked to the ingestion of samaras or seedlings containing hypoglycin A. Cases increase in autumn and spring.
  • Ragworts (Senecio spp.) cause progressive and irreversible liver damage through the accumulation of pyrrolizidine alkaloids, even when present in hay.
  • The black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) contains robinin, a toxic lectin found in the bark, leaves, and seeds, capable of causing severe colic and hemorrhagic diarrhea.

In light of this list, the catalpa falls into a significantly lower risk category. An owner who cuts down a catalpa at the edge of a pasture while leaving a yew or ragwort is doing exactly the opposite of what prevention dictates.

Ingestion of leaves and pods by the horse: concrete risk scenarios

Horses in the pasture rarely exhibit feeding behavior directed towards the catalpa. The large, leathery leaves and long woody pods do not present a marked appeal to equines, unlike the young shoots of black locust or the samaras of sycamore that are sometimes grazed along with the rest of the grass.

The real risk concentrates on two specific situations. The first concerns horses in depleted pastures: a hungry horse grazes what a well-fed horse ignores. When grass is scarce, the likelihood of foliage ingestion increases for all species present in the plot.

The second concerns pruning waste. After trimming, the cut branches and leaves left on the ground or thrown into a pasture attract more attention from horses than the standing tree. This “feeding curiosity” reflex applies to the catalpa as well as to most trees, including harmless species.

Post-ingestion monitoring

In the event of confirmed ingestion of catalpa pods or leaves, the expected disturbances generally limit themselves to moderate diarrhea and transient oral irritation. No specialized veterinary source documents cases of fatal poisoning in horses attributed to catalpa.

However, we recommend a systematic veterinary call in case of doubt. Rapid identification of the ingested plant remains the first reflex to adopt, as digestive symptoms (colic, diarrhea) are common to many plant poisonings, some of which pose a serious risk to life.

Catalpa in pasture: balancing shade and equine safety

Shade is a physiological need for horses, especially during the summer months. Removing a functional shade tree due to a low theoretical risk exposes the horse to a well-documented risk: thermal stress.

Rather than systematic removal, we advocate for a perimeter management approach. Fencing around the base of the tree prevents access to fallen pods while retaining the benefit of the projected shade. A fence radius of a few meters is sufficient in most configurations.

Collecting woody pods in the autumn and immediately removing pruning waste complements this prevention. These simple measures reduce an already low risk to a negligible level.

If you plant a new tree at the edge of a pasture, choosing recognized species that are safe for equines (willow, hazel, hornbeam) remains the safest solution. On the other hand, cutting down a healthy adult catalpa for an undocumented risk is disproportionate when yews, black locusts, or sycamores are present in the same environment.

The priority for any horse owner remains a complete botanical inventory of the plot and its surroundings. An identified and managed catalpa does not pose a significant problem. An unrecognized sycamore at the edge, however, does.
